K-12 Suicide Prevention Programs

Many people think suicide prevention is an individual thing – that someone who is struggling needs prevention and support. But really, prevention is about educating everybody on what to do if they’re worried about themselves or a friend.

SOS Signs of Suicide has taught adults and children how to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) for decades – not only how to identify the warning signs of depression and suicide, but also how to have a conversation about it.

Learn more about SOS’s evidence-based program for middle and high school students, plus training your K-12 school staff.

"I love that SOS fits into one class period. Something that’s so impactful and empowering in such a short time is really hard to find.

This is a program we know works."

Support After A Suicide

The days after a suicide can be extremely sensitive and often leave schools looking for more support.

In these instances, we’ll help you address the specific needs of your community, while responding to the loss in a safe and appropriate way. This includes best practices for:

  • supporting those who are grieving
  • reducing risk or unsafe reactions in students
  • communicating with faculty, students, and parents
  • implementing SOS following a suicide

Our protocols have been listed in the SPRC Best Practices Registry and our work includes trainings, grief counseling, coping groups, interim support, and long-term recommendations for schools across the country.

Become A Trauma-Informed School

Just as students have different learning needs, many also have different emotional needs.

Creating a trauma-informed learning environment offers a universal foundation to support those who have experienced trauma or may be coping with a traumatic experience.

It also helps you build a safe and supportive community for staff and students. We’ll work with you to incorporate practical trauma-informed strategies that consider:

  • the importance of understanding trauma and its impact
  • ways to help students overcome triggers or challenges during the day
  • how school spaces can be designed to make students feel safer
  • how predictability and structure optimize learning and growth

Whether through our Trauma-Informed Practices for School Staff course, consultation, or trainings – we offer a range of ways to begin implementing trauma-informed practices within your school community.

“I use these tools in planning my lessons and in how I engage with the kids. I now assume everyone could have trauma.

Thinking through a trauma-informed lens helps me crack open the window to be a safe place for my kids."

Trainings For Your School

When it comes to training your school on suicide prevention, trauma-informed care, or how to respond to a highly stressful event – our goal is to prepare your staff for tough, but manageable situations.

This not only includes our training offerings, but also recommendations that help you:

  • broach sensitive topics with your school community
  • respond to parents or school board concerns
  • and provide supporting information and resources

Crisis Response

When a traumatic incident occurs in your school or within your school’s community, it requires immediate and thoughtful action, as well as short- and long-term plans for support.

Whether you need initial advisement or long-term recommendations, our trained responders are available to:

  • Provide consultation and support to administrators and staff throughout the crisis
  • Create and/or implement a plan for the upcoming hours, days, weeks, and months
  • Offer 1:1 support to talk with individuals about grief and what they’re experiencing
  • Host coping groups to help process reactions and identify coping strategies
