Overview

During the school year, students often spend more time at school than at home. That puts school staff in the unique position to recognize changes in a student’s behavior and become a trusted adult that students may turn to for help.

Similar to our one-hour, asynchronous training, our SOS for School Staff (Live Gatekeeper Training), is designed to equip the trusted adults in your school community with the knowledge and confidence needed to recognize and respond to warning signs of suicide and crises in youth. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), gatekeeper training is one of the most widely used suicide prevention training strategies for people who are not clinicians.

Through video examples of real-world conversations and stories from teens, as well as expert-guided discussion, participants will learn:

  • How to recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicide in students.
  • How to engage in appropriate, caring conversations with students.
  • The steps for how to keep a student safe, while connecting them to appropriate school staff.
